The World Heart Foundation organizes World Heart Day which is an international campaign held on every September 29. The purpose of this day is to inform people about the cardiovascular diseases. These are the biggest cause of the death. The day will promote preventative measures for reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
What Happens on World Heart Day?
This days is celebrated by governments and non-government and promote World Heart Day with multiple activities. The list of include fun runs, concerts, public talks, and sporting events.
The World Heart Federation organize the awareness events in more than 100 countries. The event will include:
- Health checkups and Exhibitions
- Multiple public talks and Science forums
- Stage shows and Concerts.
- Sports events that include walks, runs and fitness sessions.
All these activities are done in partnership with organizations like World Health Organization (WHO), it is the UN’s directing and coordinating authority related to health.
It is a global observance; it is not a public holiday.
About World Heart Day
Cardiovascular diseases are one of the causes of death worldwide and this will remain an important reason according to WHO. According to an estimate, 17.9 million people dies from cardiovascular disease and it is in 30% of all the global deaths. It is important to note that risk factors that lead to heart disease and stroke include:
- Raised blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels.
- Inadequate intake of fruit and vegetables.
The purpose of this day was to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are one of the world’s leading cause of death. Together with organizations like WHO and World Heart Federation spreads the news that 80% of the premature deaths from heart disease and stroke can be avoided if the main risk factors like tobacco, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity are controlled. This day was first celebrated in 1999 and it is held on the last Sunday of September every year.
